On July 10th at the Pensacola Junior College, Haglar Auditorium a forum will take place to address the topic of prison abuse in the United States. |
"Not Only Abu Ghraib: Exposing Prison Abuse at Home" is a community forum organized to help educate the public on the abuse of prisoners locally. It will also make the connection between the prison abuse scandal in Iraq and the unreported prison abuse right in our backyard.
Several speakers from very diverse backgrounds will talk about many different aspects of a complicated problem in an effort to help understand why prison abuse happens, who it happens to, and what we can do to end it.
The speakers will be:
Dr. Cheryl Swanson from the University of West Florida's Criminal Justice and Legal Studies department will speak on prison abuse from a theoretical perspective.
Reverend William Marshall from Movement for Change will speak concerning the treatment of prisoners in the Escambia County Jail.
Lisa White Shirley from the Florida Institutional Legal Services will address the use of chemical agents against prisoners in the state of Florida.

Kenyon Furrow from Critical Resistance will talk about the movement to end the Prison Industrial Complex and challenge the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe.
Nahla Al-Arian, wife of Sami Al-Arian, the USF professor who has been in US detention for over a year without trial will speak on the issues concerning her husband's indefinate incarceration, human rights abuses, and the ongoing attack by the Justice Department on the Muslim community since 9/11

Brent Cox from the Florida Panhandle Chapter of the ACLU will act as moderator
When: July 10, 2004 at 11 a.m.

I think its horrendous that people who kill, rape children, slit your throat because you believe in a different god, sell drugs and dope to children, steal from people that have WORKED HARD for the things have, with no regard for basic human rights need you fanatics to champion their "fair treatment" in prisons that they have been sent to as a PUNISHMENT, not a retreat. Let them be punished, as they deserve to be. Or why don't we let them stay in your home or live on your street, maybe they already do. |

If you are of means, you don't go to jail no matter what you do. If you are poor, the jails become the homes for you. What conservatives fail to see is that everyone in society will have to deal with prisoners sooner or later. The worse the condition of their incaration, the worse off the person who will one day be back on the streets. Whether you like to think so or not, one day we will all have to deal with this. Or maybe conservatives would be happier if we lived in a police state. It might happen one day. |

I edited the article because it was a personal jab that wasn't relevent to the forum or content. of the article. But I put an editors note that said if anyone had a problem with it, I'd post it back. I'm pretty new to the editor program and accidentally deleted it instead of hiding it. But this is the comment:
"WOW! It took TWO of you to write this!"
It's back. Thank you for your comment. |

This is from WEAR TV 3's web site. I don't know if they actually showed film of the forum or not. But at least they covered it somewhat favorably.
*************
Prisoner Abuse Forum
Prisoner abuse throughout the U.S., including our area, was the focus of a public forum this afternoon at Pensacola Junior College.
Panelists from several different organizations, including the wife and son of an muslim man who's been detained for a year without a trial, discussed the problem nationally and locally.
The program titled "Not Only Abu Ghraib," originated after abuse at the Iraqi prison was exposed. The forum shed light on the situation here in the states. Organizers say many Americans think convicts are subject to any treatment they receive.
Lauren Anzaldo/Forum Co-Coordinator: "And as a result you get abuse that goes unanswered, unattested to, unresponded to, cause it's seen as unimportant and it's seen as just a part of the system, and it actually it is just part of the system and that's a problem."
The forum was sponsored by the ACLU and UWF's Criminal Justice Department. |
