Anarchist protestors were met with police violence at D & 4th streets NW in downtown DC this afternoon.
Several hundred anarchists and anti-authoritarians marched out of Logan Circle this afternoon, with a heavy police presence on all sides, but a feisty mood. Large banners, reinforced with wood and PVC led the march, which outmaneauvered the cops on several occasions. When the march [over 2000 strong] tried to meet up with another group of protestors at 7th & D streets, not far from the Inaugural Parade Route, and police blocked their path.
After an initial beating, the anarchists backed off, reassembled and charged the police lines, but police responded with serious beating and a lot of pepper spray directly into people's eyes at short range. The crdwd was slowly dispersed. I was hit with pepper spray, and also hit by several people in teh crowd the anarchist march was trying to join: perhaps undercover cops or just pro-Bush folks with someone to get off their chests. Here's an interview with someone who was also at the front of the march |
