Arun Gandhi set to speak at Spring Hill College at 4pm on Oct 28. |
MOBILE, Ala.— Spring Hill College will welcome Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas Gandhi and President of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, for a Thursday, October 28 panel discussion on the philosophy of nonviolence.
This discussion, a "Conversation on Race and Nonviolence," is one of six events taking place in Mobile during the month of October to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. the Board of Education landmark Supreme Court case and the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Spring Hill College, Mobile United, The Quest for Social Justice, The University of South Alabama College of Arts and Sciences and Department of History and the Human Relations Commission have drawn together to sponsor the series of speeches and discussions that will also include authors Susan Youngblood Ashmore and Frye Gaillard.
At Spring Hill College, Gandhi will illustrate the role of nonviolence in the problem of racial intolerance in America and will argue that the United States has not been able to accomplish successful integration. Gandhi has said that no matter how many laws requiring integration are enacted, true racial understanding and respect will only occur if the people of the United States desire it to be so.
The panel discussion will be held at 4 p.m. in the Gautrelet Room on campus and is open to the public. A reception will follow. For more information or for directions, please call Jerry Reynolds at 380-3496. |
