Pride weekend is upon us, as thousands trannies, queers, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and allies descend upon San Francisco to celebrate a rich history of struggling for civil rights, culture, heritage, and liberation. Organized by the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Parade Committee Inc. (SFLGBTPPC Inc.), this year's festivities are particularly joyous, happening amidst a resurgence of energy in the struggle for equal rights, one example of which is the recent court rulings in favor of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, as well as marriage licenses being handed out here in San Francisco. Not all in the LGBT community are behind the idea, however, with Gay Shame, a radical queer "virus in the system," opposing marriage in any form, not "satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power." A No Pride in Occupation contingent will also march on Sunday.
This year also marks the 12th anniversary of the Dyke March, which has adopted the theme of "Uprooting Racism," which is " about dykes coming together to uproot the racism that keeps us separated, silenced and fighting one another." The SF march is the largest in the world, and upwards of 50,000 people are expected to participate.
On Fri, 6/25, some 2,000 transgender people and their friends and allies marched to support transgender and civil rights, in what was the first Tranny March since Pride started. This year the marchers mourned and demanded justice for Gwen Araujo, a transgender teenager killed in 2002 after several boys discovered she was biologically male.
