Dear friends,
Many of you will have heard about the terrible earthquake and tsunami which has devastated Aceh and Northern Sumatera in Indonesia. Indonesian
NGOs including WALHI Friends of the Earth Indonesia have established the Indonesian Civil Society Coalition for the Victims of Earthquake and Tsunami to provide aid to the victims. We have set up crisis centers in
Jakarta and Medan, North Sumatera.
SHATTERED COMMUNITIES NEED YOUR HELP! Hundreds of impoverished coastal communities have been destroyed, and a humanitarian disaster can only be
averted through a generous international donation response. The Indonesian Civil Society Coalition for the Victims of Earthquake and Tsunami is appealing for donations from members of the public abroad, as well as
within Indonesia.
All funds received by WALHI for the Coalition appeal will be allocated for emergency response as well as the post-emergency phase of rebuilding and restoration of shattered livelihoods. Please note that we can only receive financial donations from abroad for logistical reasons.
The Medan and Jakarta Crisis Centers collect funds and enlist volunteers in coordination with local organisations. Funds and resources are
mobilised by local organisations based in North Sumatera and Aceh. The latest information on our activities and needs, as well as developments on
disaster spots will be provided in the form of daily updates in the English website of WALHI-Friends of the Earth Indonesia.

SRI LANKA:
3) Nonviolent Peaceforce, who have a team in Sri - Lanka have recomended *Sarvodaya*, a large grassroots Gandhian organisation who are doing direct
relief and humanitarian work. NPF know them to be strong and effective organizations on the ground in Sri Lanka.
"Sarvodaya is the largest civil service organization in the country with a network of 34 district centers and 340 divisional centers. Over two thousand volunteers are working round the clock in all effected areas. We need your help in our relief work."
As soon as the news of the disaster reached the Sarvodaya headquarters on Sunday December 26 around 11:30 a.m. the special disaster management unit began to receive reports from the Sarvodaya district offices in the affected areas.
For many years Sarvodaya has experience responding to natural disasters like floods, droughts and landslides. Sarvodaya is has the infrastructure to deal
with disasters of this nature although nothing of this magnitude has been seen in Sri Lanka before. With its unique structure it is very well connected to the grass roots. Sarvodaya’s reputation in the community makes
them a trusted partner in its outreach activities.
In addition Sarvodaya can draw on and mobilize over 100,000 volunteers from Shanti Shena, the “peace brigade”. Shanti Shena has trained young people
between 18 to 30 years of age to deliver first aid to villages and organize the “village to village heart to heart” peace dialogue.
If you have a credit card go to the Sarvodaya donation page at http://www.sarvodaya.org/
