About 50 people gathered Tuesday morning (Aug. 10) to protest outside the Pensacola Civic Center, where George W. Bush spoke about his plans to continue dominating the world. |
|
A few weeks after his governor brother was heckled during a visit to Pensacola, George W. Bush and his supporters were greeted by protestors outside of his talk at the Pensacola Civic Center on Tuesday, Aug. 10.
Dozens of anarchists and others disgruntled with the status quo began gathering along Alcaniz Street across from the civic center at 7 a.m. They held such signs as "U.S. out of North America," "No War! No Empire! No Bush! No Kerry!" and "Capitalism is organized crime."
One protestor continually asked passing Bush supporters "On your way to hear the emperor speak?" and "Are you ready for the police state?," to which many of the attendees gleefully replied, "Yes!"
About 10 Pensacola cops in stormtrooper gear and carrying machine guns had blocked the intersection of Alcaniz and Chase streets with cop cars and four city garbage trucks.
Cops detained and took the name of one protestor who started walking with a small group on a sidewalk toward the civic center. The protestor was later released and then went to stand by the cops with a sign that said, "Police State. Are you ready?"
At least two other protestors were arrested after altercations with Bush supporters.
One cop, with the badge number 505, videotaped the protest. Brent Cox, Northwest Florida coordinator for the American Civil Liberties Union, has requested a copy of the video under the Freedom of Information Act. |

It was great to see so many turn out for the protest... but where were all the Kerry supporters?
I would like to especially thank Ryan and Donna for their ferver & motivation...we'd all like to know you were safely released from police custody.
I urge anyone with photos from the protest to please post asap.
On a side note: is anyone from p'cola going up for the RNC? I like to see if we could get a group together...if there's enough of us, maybe get a van or bus or something?
peace, kali |

Kerry is winning in Florida. Even with that Bush coming to our town.

Kerry "winning" in Florida doesn't mean much. It'll mean a lot more when Kerry actually takes a stand against this bull shit war for once. Many of the protesters at this event were neither for Bush or Kerry. They both suck and they're both going to continue the war on Iraq and the war on "terror" and the war against your civil rights. Either way, were screwed. One might be worse, but they both still suck. |

The "Political Points" column in Sunday's NYT reported that "3,000 Florida school children were instructed to stand along the president's route wearing red, white and blue clothes". Can anyone post a link confirming this? |

My little brother and sister who attend Gulf Breeze Middle School and Elementary respectively, were instructed to wear red, white, and blue, and given flags to wave for George W. Bush's Motorcade, i.e. on August 10th 2004. My sister told me upon returning from school that day that her friend had made ‘protest’ signs that said ‘no war’ and the like to hold when Bush came by. An administrator removed the signs from her once they were spotted. I also heard from my little brother that his friend had a ‘John Kerry Shirt’ in which he was told to change before going out to see the motorcade drive by. |

James, I would love to talk with you about your little brother's and sister's experience. I work with the ACLU, and this kind of censorship is as outrageous as it is typical. If you want, please give me a call at my office, 429-9128, or email me: bcox(at)aclufl.org. My home number is 436-2194. |

Daniel, this is a link to the NY Times article. It requires registration.
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/15/politics/campaign/15points.html
"At a rally in Pensacola, Fla., President Bush announced, "You know you're in good country when you got a guy holding a sign up that says, 'Bubbas for Bush.' " Three thousand Florida schoolchildren were instructed to stand along the president's route wearing red, white and blue clothes.' |

I go to Okaloosa Walton College Collegiate High School, and all students had tickets to attend Bush's speech. I made a few shirts, for me and my friends to wear when we went inside. Although they were a minor attempt at protest inside the system, they were not blatantly anti-bush. When the administration at my school found out we were wearing them, they told us we had to change, we could not wear them in to the speech. They said we were representing the school, and not ourselves. Although there were several students wearing "we love bush" tshirts. bullshit. |
